Gabon, officially called the Gabonese Republic, is a French-speaking country in Central Africa with a relatively small population and peace. The country has an estimated population of about 1.5 million people living in an area of 270,000 square kilometres. In 2003, 10 percent of the country’s land area was designated as protected national parkland due to the rainforests. Gabon’s capital is the city of Libreville, which some say is the only identifiable city in the country. The country is also one of Africa’s wealthiest countries with its wealth per head one of the highest in Africa. This is due to the country’s oil and mineral resources and its very small population.
Getting In, Around and Out of Gabon
Before coming to Gabon, get your visa as you will be sent back without a visa. You can come into the country using major airlines such as Air France, Ethiopian Arilines and Royal Air Maroc. These airlines offer flights to cities such as Casablanca in Morocco, Douala in Cameroon, Addis Ababa in Ethiopia and even Paris in France. You may also board the South African Airways direct flight to Libreville from Johannesburg on Wednesdays and Fridays. For border crossings by road, you might need to ride a 4x4 vehicle because of the bad condition of the roads. While in Gabon, bus and taxis are the best bet for going around and you will find a lot of paved roads.
