Elgeyo Marakwet has a fascinating topography divided into three; Kerio Valley, the Highlands and Escarpment which separates the two. Metkei Ridges (2700 metres above sea level) in south and Cherangany Hills (3350 metres above sea level) to north form the Highlands. These have popularized Elgeyo Marakwet as home of champions they provide best altitude training for the gold winning athletes.
The area is mainly inhabited by people belonging to Keiyo, Marakwet and Sengwer which are collectively part of Kalenjin ethnic group. The major economic activity in Elgeyo Marakwet is mixed farming, which consists primarily of livestock and subsistence farming. Others include small businesses, fluorspar mining in the Kerio Valley and Oil Prospecting which is ongoing in the valley by Tullow Oil Company.
Elgeyo Marakwet is well endowed with scenic destinations ideal for extreme and thrill sports such as paragliding in Kerio Valley, hiking in Cherang'any Hills and camping in Rimoi Park.
