Lake Bunyonyi, also known as the place of many birds is believed to be the second deepest Lake in Africa with its deepest end approximately 900 meters. The Lake is 24 kilometers long and 7 kilometers wide covering an area of 61 square kilometers. Set in the South Western part of Uganda between Kabale and Kisoro close to the border with Rwanda.The Lake is dotted with 29 Islands. The famous of all these Islands is Akampene Island, also known as the punishment Island. It’s believed that the Bakiga people used to leave girls that got pregnant before marriage so that they would die of hunger as a way of punishment. These girls would be rescued by poor men who did not have bride price to get girls for marriage on the mainland.
