Hwange is a town in the northwestern Zimbabwe that is located quite close to the borders of the Republic of Zambia and Botswana. The town is about 100 kilometers (by road), southeast of Victoria Falls which is also in the Hwange District, in Matebeleland North Province. It lies on the railway line that span from Bulawayo (the second largest city behind the capital city of Harare).
Hwange town of today was formerly called Wankie before the change in 1982. Wankie (now Hwange) was founded around 1900 when coal was discovered in the town. The largest power plant in the Zimbabwe, the Hwange Thermal Power Station can also be found in this town.
Hwange National Park
Hwange town is a good tourism centre being home to the biggest national park in the whole of Zimbabwe which is the Hwange National Park (formerly Wankie Game Reserve). The game reserve was established in 1928 and home to over 400 species of birds and 100 mammals.
