About Ikorongo Game Reserve
The Ikorongo Game Reserve is a game reserve located in Mara Region on the North western side of the Serengeti National Park Tanzania. It was established in 1993 and covers an area of 3,000 km square. The game reserve is close to the Serengeti National Park forming larger Serengeti- Masai Mara ecosystem that experiences the famous great wildebeest migration. The reserve experiences two seasons; the long rainy season that are from March to May while the short rains occur in September to December. The game reserve can be accessed by road from Serengeti National Park.
Things to do in Ikorongo Game Reserve
The major attractions in the game reserve include: Bangwesi hill which is the highest point in the Ikorongo Game Reserve, tourists can comfortably watch the wildebeest migration while at its peak. The dominant fauna include Acacia tortillis, Acacia drepanolodum and Acacia robusta. The reserve has a vast number of wildlife species some of which include wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, Thomson and grant gazelle. Other animal common to the reserve include Roan and Sable antelopes, black and white colobus monkey, lion, African Elephant, Giraffe, Warthog, Impala, Topi, Eland and bushbuck.
The game reserve is also an important feeding and roosting ground for African- Eurasian Migratory water birds. Some other birds found on the game reserve are Ostriches, Eagles, Marabou Stock, Crowned Cranes, Guinea Fowl, and lesser bustard, Secretary Bird, Ground Hornbill and Kori Bustards.
