Bahr el Ghazal is a region of South Sudan and is further divided into four states: Western Bahr el Ghazal, Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Lakes and Warrap. The region has a population of 2,722,987 as of the 2008 census spread over 210,785 square kilometres. Bahr el Ghazal’s inhabitants are made up of mainly people of the Dinka tribe, along with the Luwo and Fartit tribes with farming and cattle bearing being the main source of living.

Bahr el Ghazal has seven local airports including the two in Western Bahr el Ghazal (one in Wau city, and another in Raga). These airports do not offer international flights and international flights have to connect through the Juba International Airport in the country’s capital.

Visit the Bahr el Ghazal river. The river is where the region gets its name from and can be translated to mean “sea of gazelles”. You can also check the two universities in the region: The University of Bahr el Ghazal, Wau and the University of Northern Bahr el Ghazal. Do not leave the Bahr el Ghazal without visiting The Southern National Park and see animals such as the giant forest hog, crocodiles, buffalo, giraffes and many more.
