Kaolack is a regional market town situated on the north bank of the Saloum River. The town is the capital of the Kaolack region, which has to its south, the border of the Gambia. Founded by two Sereer princesses, Kaolack became the successor city to the historic capital of the Kingdom of Saloum, Kahone. For its location, Kaolack was strategic for shipping.
