Osun is one of the 36 States in Nigeria. Formerly nicknamed “The Living Spring“ but now known as “The Land of virtue” it was carved out of the old Oyo state in August, 1991. Osun State was named after the goddess of River Osun which flows through the city into the Lagos Lagoon. Osun was said to have been one of the wives of Sango (the god of thunder) before turning into a river after being angered by a particular scenario. Till date the Osun Oshogbo festival takes places annually and different people from all over the world come together for this event which takes place every August. Osun is home to the Osun State University which was commissioned in the month of December 2006.
The state is blessed with an astonishing cultural tradition, excellent music and art works, mesmerizing cultural dance steps and nicely made traditional attires, the people are skilled with the ability to make lots of locally hand made products like tie and dye cloths called Adire, leather works, calabash and mat weaving.
