The history of Ajah land dates back to 1700s when Ogunsemo (A Benin Prince) left Benin for Lagos. History has it that Prince came with all his insignia which included his royal bangles and beads, Opon Ifa (Ifa table) and Buffaloshin. On arriving he first gave the land a Benin name “Azale” (meaning Treasure Island) which was later commonly mispronounced as “Ajah Ile”. Ajah in the colonial era was one of the few lands that maintained its autonomy. Ajah today is a developing residential area for the middle class Lagosians that work on Victoria Island and its environs.
