Nouakchott, also known as the place of winds, is a large city in Mauritania. It is the largest and capital city of Mauritania, Nouakchott is also one of the largest cities in the Sahara. The city was formerly a small fishing village in Mauritania, due to the recurring drought in the Sahara, people have been forced to move down to the city, from a population of 15,000 people in the 1950’s, it now has a population of almost one million as of 2013. Nouakchott is home to a major port in the country, which makes it a key contributor to the country’s economy various, companies, refineries and factories are all situated within Nouakchott. The city has 9 districts situated within it, it is also home to its very own university, the University of Nouakchott, which is the only university in Mauritania. The city is served by an International Airport.
