Kayes city is the capital city of Kayes region of Mali. The city derived its name from the Soninke word “karre” meaning a low humid place which floods during the rainy season.Kayes city has a population of 127,368 according to the 2009 census. Kayes is 615 kilometres from the country’s capital city of Bamako, and just 96km from Mali’s border with Senegal. The city is rich in iron and gold.
