About Zomba, Malawi
Zomba is a city located in the Shire Highlands of southern Malawi. The town serves as the administrative capital of Zomba District. It served as the first capital of Malawi before it was replaced by Lilongwe in 1974. The major economic source in Zomba is agriculture, it is main centre for tobacco and dairy farming, other produce are rice, maize and soft wood. Zomba is rich in timber which is extracted from the Zomba Plateau.
The town is renowned for its beautiful British colonial architecture. Zomba serves as home to the Chancellor College of the University of Malawi and the Zomba Hospital.

The major attraction in Zomba is the Zomba Plateau which offers various leisurely activities like mountain biking, rock climbing, bird watching, horse riding and fishing. A craft market which provides locally made souvenirs is open to tourists, the market at the centre of the town sells various food stuffs, livestock and clothing. Another major attraction is the endangered species of white winged apalis which has been spotted in the forest along Mulunguzi River.
Transportation in Zomba
Boarding a Kombi bus from Lilongwe or Blantyre through M1, which is Malawi’s main north-south highway is one of the best ways to get to Zomba. The town is connected to Liwonde, Balaka, Lake Malawi and Liwonde through mini buses. The town is also served by the Chileka International Airport located 70 kilometres south of Zomba.
