Lake Turkana, commonly referred to as 'Jade Sea' due to its azure colour resulting from the algae, is the world's largest desert lake with an area of 6405 km. sq. The lake is located in the north-west of Kenya with the tip crossing over into Ethiopia.
Lake Turkana was formerly known as Lake Rudolf after Count Teleki named it after the Crown Prince of Austria in 1888 It was not until 1975 that it was changed back to Lake Turkana after the people living on its shores.
