Karatina is located on the Nairobi-Nyeri Highway in Nyeri County, Kenya. The town was founded by Gikuyu women who traded their crafts and wood under a Muratina (courgette) tree.
The word Karatina comes from the Muratina tree. During the State of Emergency, Mau Mau fighters would get their supplies from this area and head back into the forest.
Karatina's economy mainly depends on agriculture because this is one of the most productive regions in the country. The agricultural products grown here include tea, coffee and a variety of fruits such as bananas and mangoes.
