Visiting Tigray, Ethiopia
Located in the far north of Ethiopia, Tigray is one of the nine ethnic groups in the country and the home of the Tigray people. It is the historical home of the ancient Aksumite kingdom. Tigray region has Mek’ele as the capital city. The region is bordered by other regions such as Afar Region, Amhara Region and countries like Eritrea and Sudan. Tigray is of historical significance as the city Yeha, home of the oldest monument in Ethiopia is in the region. Tigrinya is widely spoken in Tigray as the mother tongue. Ethiopian culture and religion are considered to have come from Tigray. To get into Tigray by air, there are airports in Mekele and Aksum. Buses are also available from Addis Ababa to Mekele and Aksum.

The rock-hewn churches in Tigray are some of the places to visit in the region. The churches are beautiful and similar to those in Lalibela. The ancient Debre Damo monastery in Tigray can be reached by climbing a rope 25 meters up a cliff. The single rock sculpture in Aksum is one of the things to see. Yeha houses the oldest standing structure in the country, the temple of Yeha.
