Cities in the zone include Dessie, Amba Mariam, Hayq, and Wuchale. It is bordered by Semien Shewa (North Shewa) and the Oromia region to the south, Semien Wollo or North Wollo) to the north, Oromia Zone and Argobba special woreda to the east and to the west by Mirab Gojjam.
