About Afar Region, Ethiopia
The Afar Region is one of the nine regional states in Ethiopia, covering the northeastern part of Ethiopia. The capital city of Afar is Semera. Afar consists of 5 administrative zones, 29 woredas and 28 towns. This is home to Afar people who practice pastoralism as their major economic activity.
The region is well known for the discovery the earliest early hominid fossil 'Lucy' discovered in 1974. It is assumed to have lived about 3.2 million years ago. Much of Afar is below sea level making it one of the hottest places on Earth
