Sharm el-Sheikh is a city located on the southern end of the Sinai Peninsula of South Sinai Governorate in Egypt. The town lies on the coastal strip along the Red Sea. Sharm el-Sheikh serves as the administrative centre of South Sinai Governorate, which is made up of smaller coastal towns of Nuweiba and Dahab, as well as the inner mountainous towns of St. Catherine's Monastery and Mount Sinai.
The town is a well-known holiday resort and major centre for tourism in Egypt. The marine life species in Sharm el-Sheikh is made up of about 250 different coral reefs and a thousand species of fish. These resources together with its proximity to European tourism markets, has ensured the rapid growth of tourism in the town.
Sharm el-Sheik is also the home to a congress centre called the Maritim Sharm el-Sheikh International Congress Centre where several international political and economic meetings have been held. The town serves as home to the Sharm el-Sheikh Hyperbaric Medical Centre, which was established to assist with diving-related illnesses.
