There are five main airports in Kenya, and approximately 230 airstrips around Kenya, including well-maintained dirt strips in most of the national parks and reserves such as Tsavo, Amboseli, Samburu and Masai Mara. 

  • Most flights to Kenya land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi. This airport is Kenya's largest airport and serves the most destinations.
  • Some international flights go to Moi International Airport (MBA) in Mombasa. This is the largest airport at the coast of Kenya.
  • Kisumu International Airport (KIS) is the third busiest airport in Kenya and the country's fourth largest international airport after Eldoret Airport (EDL).

  • Wilson Airport (WIL)is mainly used for domestic flights with light aircraft. It is used for cargo transport and to fly passengers to popular tourist attractions in Kenya.
  • Malindi airport (MYD) serves Malindi and its environs when Ukunda Airstrip (UKA) serves Ukunda area and Diani Beach.

Flights from the US and Canada go via one of the European hubs (mainly Amsterdam, London, Brussels or Zurich) or via African hubs (Cairo, Addis Ababa). There may soon be non-stop flights between the United States and Kenya as Kenya received a safety certification in February 2017 from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration that will allow its airlines to apply for non-stop flights to U.S. airports.

How to get a visa for Kenya?

A passport and visa are required for entry into Kenya. A passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry, and with at least two blank pages, is required.
While single-entry visas are currently still available upon arrival at Kenyan airports, Kenya Immigration plans to end visas upon arrival at some point in the future. Therefore, all travelers are strongly encouraged to apply online through the e-visa process.

For a foreigner whose citizenship is outside East African Community, the costs of a visa to Kenya are:

  • Single entry visa (Business or Tourism): $51
  • Transit visa: $21
  • East Africa Tourist Visa: $101
  • Since the 1st February 2016 children under 16 years of age accompanying their parent(s) to Kenya will be exempted from paying visa fees.
