The small town of Watamu is a peaceful village situated next to the coast of Kenya roughly 100km north of Mombassa. Holidays here are spent snorkelling, diving and fishing in the Indian Ocean, or just relaxing on the white sandy beaches.
The nearest international airport to Watamu is Jomo Kenyatta in Nairobi. From here you take a 45-minute flight to Malindi airport and a 15km taxi ride. To explore the area, visitors take taxis or hire bicycles.
The weather is hot with temperatures staying around 30C all year. The rainiest month in this part of Kenya is May, and the driest is February.
There is a choice of places to visit, the most popular is Watamu Marine National Park where you can spot dolphins, turtles, tropical fish and coral.
Take a glass bottom boat trip or tour the mangroves. In the evenings there is a choice of fine places to eat and drink.
A long walk on the beach is also an ideal activity, Watamu is renowned for its fishing competitions; an exciting escapade which keep even the most skilled fisherman alert till the end.
Other places of interest in Watamu are Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, mangrove forests of Mida Creek and Gedi Ruins.
