The University of Lagos, popularly called Unilag, is a tertiary education institution located in Lagos State, southwestern Nigeria. Unilag is one of the federal government research institutions in Lagos State. The students of the university refer to it as “the university of first choice”.
The university was established in 1962 by the Nigerian government. Unilag is among the most competitive universities in Nigeria when it comes to admission. It is also on of the first generation universities in Nigeria.
Unilag main campus is situated at Akoka, Yaba while the campus for the medical students at Unilag College of Medicine is located at Idi-Araba, Surulere which is a few kilometers from the main campus.
The University has 14 academic units which consists of wide variety of schools and professional faculties. Majority of the faculties are situated on the main campus apart from the faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Dental Sciences and Pharmacy which are situated in the College of Medicine at Idi Araba. Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) is also located within the College of Medicine in Idi Araba. The academic bodies of the institution is made up of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Distance Learning Institute (DLI) and full-time undergraduate programs. Unilag also has other institutes and centers in addition to the many departments its faculties have.
There are many faculties in Unilag. They are Arts, Social Sciences, Business Administration, Law, Science, Environmental Sciences, Engineering/Technology, School of Clinical Sciences, School of Dental Sciences, Pharmacy and Education.
