Meru County is situated at about 225km from Nairobi on the eastern side of Mt. Kenya. There are 5 major trading towns with a good network of roads between them as well as with the neighbouring Isiolo, Nyeri, Laikipia and Tharaka-Nithi Counties.
Meru National Park is home to a variety of wildlife that include Somali Ostrich, Onyx, rhinos, buffalos, leopards, lions, giraffes, and zebras. The Meru National Park is the major highlight of this region as there are 13 rivers, diverse landscapes and delightful scenery of hills.
There is a less popular route used for climbing Mount Kenya National Park via Chogoria on the MerU-Embu Road.
Other places tourists can visit are the home of George and Joy Adamson, Adamson's Falls and Tana River.
Minivans called matatus travel across town. Alternatively, tourists may hire a private car. A 4X4 vehicle is highly recommended because of the national park's rough terrain.
