Mbarara is a major city in western Uganda, around 200 miles west of Kampala and not far from the Rwandan and Tanzanian borders.
The town is a great place for anyone who adores nature, with some breathtaking scenery and safari opportunities. But it's also more than a tourist centre, with thriving universities, markets and breweries. You can easily enjoy nights out in the city and spend your days exploring the beauty of the countryside.
You'll find plenty of attractions in south-western Uganda to keep you busy. You can take tours to Lake Mburo - one of the best places on earth to see zebras and impala in the wild.
There are also canoe hire companies at the lake and near the River Ruizi, and few things are more relaxing than spending a day paddling or catching fish.
And, if you are willing to travel, major safari reserves like Queen Elizabeth National Park are a few hours away.
