Lushoto is one of the oldest cities in north-eastern Tanzania and a lovely place to spend time. The city is nestled in dramatic hills, including the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro and its altitude means that the weather is extremely mild, with cool breezes, plenty of sunshine and wonderful conditions for outdoor activities. If you want to explore the stunning scenery of this part of Tanzania, there's no better place to base yourself. Local culture is strong in Lushoto and Swahili is the main language used by the tribes that live here; the Sambaa, Kilindi, Zigua and Mbugu.
The most famous attraction near Lushoto is Mount Kilimanjaro. Soaring almost 6,000 metres above sea level, it's an awe-inspiring sight. Visitors can also take rainforest tours with the The Friends of Usambara, who look after the biodiversity of the region, drive to the beautiful Irente Viewpoint or swim beneath the Mkuzu Waterfall. You can take tours of spice farms and markets, try freshly grown bananas and snap up craft products by artisans from the Wasambaa population.
To get to Lushoto from Dar es Salaam, you can take any bus to Moshi/Arusha and get off at Mombo, then take a dala to Lushoto . There are also a few buses that go straight to Lushoto from Dar.
