La Nouvelle Liberte is a popular monument situated in Douala. It was established in July 1996 by an artist named Joseph-Francis Sumégné. This installation was not without controversy because the artist was misunderstood by this work, which is made especially of a collection of metallic parts of recovery mounted on a framework of boiler making. The monument measuring 12 meters high was completed only eleven years later by its creator and then inaugurated in December 2007 by the Delegate of the Government to the urban community during the Urban Fair of Douala. This work was offered by its creator to the city of Douala. Nowadays, it is part of the municipal heritage and has become the emblem of the city of Douala.
