Karatina is a small town in Kenya's Nyeri County. Despite its small population of just under 7,000 inhabitants, the town plays host to the largest open-air market in East Africa and the second largest in Africa.
Karatina is a distance of 135 km from the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, where the closest airport is also to be found. The easiest and cheapest method of travel between the two is by bus and there are several coach and minivan operators between the two places. It's also possible to drive, the two cities being linked by the A2 Motorway.

The town hosts a number of places to visit, such as the Catholic Church and Kiioo Modern Art Museum as well as having several bars, pubs, and restaurants to enjoy. Like so many destinations in Kenya, Karatina is noted for its natural surrounding beauty and there are also plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy such as cycling and hiking. The Karatina Market is the largest open-air market in sub-Saharan Africa, and it is situated along the Nairobi-Nyeri Highway. This fresh fruits and vegetables market is open three times in a week.
