Geita is a prosperous city that is famous for its gold mines in northwestern Tanzania, but also has plenty to offer ordinary tourists.
Anyone visiting the town can fly into Geita Airport from other cities in Tanzania, or take international flights to Mwanza International Airport. The best way to get from Mwanza to the city is by road, which is a 190 mile journey. However, you may also be able to fly into Kigali Airport in neighbouring Rwanda, which would cut the journey time considerably, so it's well worth investigating.
Geita is a great base to explore places like Maisome Island, with its pristine forests and village resorts. It's also the ideal place to stay if you'd like to see the beautiful scenery around Lake Victoria, and enjoy freshly caught tilapia at lakeside restaurants. It's a lovely destination in one of Tanzania's most stunning regions.
Some of the major attractions around the town include: Rubondo Island National Park which is home to over 400 species of birds and various animals, the Saa Nane Island, Kagera Museum and Bukaba the site of ancient cave paintings.
