Kormantin in Central Region, Ghana is the location of Fort Amsterdam. Fort Amsterdam is one of the oldest forts built in the then Gold Coast (now Ghana) by the British. Fort Amsterdam was formerly called Fort Kormantin of Fort Courmantyne until the Dutch subsequently took possession of the fort. They captured the fort after a keen battle with the British.
Fort Amsterdam is opened to the general public from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm in the week. The fort near Elmina is managed by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB).
