An important market town in eastern Burkina Faso, Fada-Ngourma lays 220km east of the capital, Ouagadougou and is the capital of the Gourma province. It can trace its history back to the 13th century when it was named Bingo. After accepting French 'protection' in 1895, the name was changed by the local ruler to its present name, which means "one who pays tax". While Fada-Ngourma does have its own airport it is now disused, meaning the closest airport is in Ouagadougou. As there are no trains in this part of Burkina Faso, upon arrival in the capital, the best way to travel here is either by bus, of which there are two companies; STMB and ZST, or by taxi.
