Popular African Cocktails and How to Prepare Them

You can’t buy happiness, BUT, you can prepare a cocktail; and that’s kind of the same thing!
Hosting Sunday brunch? Catching up with your girls? Netflix and chilling with your Babe? Here’s a pick of mouth warming African Cocktails that you can prepare and never go wrong. Enjoy!

1. Kenyan Dawa
Dawa is a Swahili word which means medicine. The Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi, is responsible for the fame this cocktail has amassed over the years. Legend has it that this African cocktail can heal anything! Whether you were having a tough week at work, writers block or even a cold. Serve chilled with lots of nyama choma.

Ingredients:
2 slices of lime
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
2 shots of Vodka (we recommend Smirnoff 🙂 )
2 tablespoons honey
Crushed Ice

Method:
Fill a glass with the vodka and ice.
Add the limes in and the sugar.
Dip a wooden stick into the honey and add in 2 tablespoons equivalent into the glass.
Mix well with the wooden stick and crush the limes.
If you want the drink a bit sweeter add a bit more honey.

2. Ethiopian Mead (Tej)
According to ancient history, mead was consumed when parties had come together to seal a deal. The most consumed variation of mead in Africa is Tej; an Ethiopian honey based wine. It is believed that Tej was drunk by the likes of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon. Tej is best served chilled, with spicy Ethiopian Food.

Ingredients:
2 cups of water
1/3 cup honey
750ml of white wine

Method:
In a small saucepan, heat the water and honey over low flame, stirring until the honey is completely dissolved.
Remove from heat and chill completely.
Pour the honey water and wine together into a decorative glass decanter.
Mix together and serve slightly chilled.

3. Nigerian Chapman
Also known as the African Sangria, The Nigerian Chapman is the perfect cocktail for any occasion. If you are hosting brunch anytime soon and you want to impress your guests, The Nigerian Chapman will not dissapoint. Plus, its quite easy to make. Best served chilled, on a warm sunny day.

Ingredients:
½ cup Grenadine Syrup
2 tablespoons of Angostura Aromatic Bitters
350ml Fanta Orange
350ml Sprite
½ an Orange
½ a lemon
Ice cubes
Ribena Blackcurrant
Sliced oranges, cucumbers and apples

Method:
Put the icecubes in your mixing jar.
Add half a cup of the Grenadine Syrup.
Add 2 tablespoons of Angostura Bitters.
Add a squeeze of orange and lemon each.
Add the Fanta Orange and the Sprite. (Remember to leave some space because the garnishings will take up their own volume)
Add your sliced garnishings: cucumber, apples, orange and lemons.
Top off with Ribena blackcurrant and stir.

4. The African Sunrise
This is for the coffee lovers. The African Sunrise is perfect for those cold nights or weekends when you are hanging out with your significant other. Make some African Sunrise and order takeout from your best restaurant for the perfect weekend. Make sure to enjoy the sunrise while sippig onto this drink; for the culture!

Ingredients:
200ml Kenyan or Ethiopian coffee, (hot)
120ml citrus vodka
60ml sparkling water
30ml simple syrup
Ice cubes

Method:
Brew the coffee.
Mix the vodka, sparkling water and syrup, then pour the coffee into the drink warm.
Add ice cubes to the cup, and serve.
