Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is one of the most visited provinces of Pakistan with the main tourist spots. The capital being Peshawar, it attracts a lot of indirect tourism. Here is a list of things you can do when in Peshawar:

  1. Explore Pakistan’s most ethnically and linguistically diverse city

Known as the City’s Frontier, located close to the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan, Peshawar is the home to various cultural backgrounds, and the largest city that promotes education, business in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.


  1. Visit the famous Khyber pass

Known as one of the oldest passes in the history of the world, Khyber Pass connects Pakistan and Afghanistan- cutting through a northeastern part of the Spin Ghar Mountains. Throughout history it is known to be one of the most strategic passes that has connected Pakistan to the trade of Central Asia and South Asia. Although it was one of the top tourist spots, it has now been banned due to the takeover by Taliban, curbing the flow of tourism.

   3.  Bala Hisar Fort

Known as the elevated fort, bala Hisaar is one of the most eye-catching and historic places of Peshawar. Initially to open for tourism, the KPK Government of tehreek-e-Insaaf has proposed the government to make it one of the tourist spot. Telling us the story of the Durrani Empire, Bala Hisaar Fort is one the places a person has to visit once in Peshawar.

  1. Try Charsi Tikka

A famous afghan dish spread all over Asia, Charsi tikka is one of the most famous dishes of Peshawar that one has to try. At the Khyber Charsi Restaurant, one gets to try one of the most mouthwatering and scrumptious tikka, they have ever tried.

  1. Visit the Qissa Khawani Bazaar

Known as the Piccadilly of Peshawar, Qissa Bazar is the bazaar of the story tellers. It is a must visit for the tourists due to its historical value and heritage and its ambiance. History claims that before the Qissa Khawani Massacre, it the hub for business men, who used to do business during days and tell stories at night, sitting by the fire and drinking Qahwa. Things to do in Qissa Khawani are endless, start with visiting the bazaar, have the Qahwa, buy brass items, visit old Inns, buy their unique clay pots to name a few.

  1. Visit the Peshawar museum

Created in the memory of Queen Victoria, it was established in 1907. Over a 100 years old, this is one of the museums that one should visit when in Pakistan. Portraying a combination of the British, Muslims and Hindus architectural styles,  14,000 items, art, sculptures, coins, manuscripts, statues, and ancient books, early versions of the Holy Quran, weapons, dresses, jewelry, Kalash effigies, inscriptions, paintings of the Mughal and later periods, household materials and pottery, as well as local and Persian handicrafts.

  1. Buddhist Stupas

On the outskirts of the city, are the remains of one of the oldest Buddhist Stupa, aging back to 2AD. It is one of the most visited sights of Peshawar, attracting locals as well as foreigners especially Hindus.

Once magnificent with its double storied pavilions and high corner towers, all that remains now is the foundation of the Monastery which still attracts thousands of visitors to appreciate the once magnificent building.

These are some of the things one should definitely do when in Peshawar. Each of these places have a charm and importance of their own, and of not visited, then leaves a void that cannot be filled.
