It is the last month of the year! Yay!!! As expected with December, a good number of Nigerians travel with their family or significant other to various destinations these holidays.

What is probably holding them back from planning their trips is that they are yet to decide the destination to spend their holiday.

This uncertainty happens despite the fact that there are uncountable and numerous holiday destinations in Nigeria, Africa and the world.

However, it can be difficult for some people to browse through the truckload of information thrown at them.

To this end, Jumia Travel has gathered 15 destinations in Nigeria, Africa and the world. These destinations are based on what Nigerians are searching for.

NIGERIA

Calabar

Calabar is arguably Nigeria’s most tourist-centric state. The state hosts the biggest carnival in Nigeria and in Africa. The Calabar carnival attracts over two million revellers and features participants from over 25 different countries. The one-month long event culminates in the biggest street party in Africa which will be held on 30th December 2019. Other destinations in Calabar are Obudu Mountain resort, Tinapa Resort, Slave Trade Museum, and Calabar Drill Monkey Ranch. It is a worthy destination to visit.

Abeokuta

Abeokuta, the capital city of Ogun state, has over the years evolved to become a hotspot for tourism in Nigeria. Thanks to its rich history and rocky landscape, it is now a choice destination for many fun-seekers. Abeokuta is home to the popular Olumo Rock. The rock is 137 meters above sea level. To have a panoramic view of Abeokuta, you have the choice of either climbing or go the easy way of using an elevator to get to the top. Other destinations in Abeokuta are Itoku Market, the New Presidential Library and Museum at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Arakanga Nature Reserve and Centenary Hall.

Bauchi

Bauchi, located in Northern Nigeria and in the state dwells one of the well-known wildlife destinations in the country-The Yankari Games Reserves. The Park was established in 1956 and opened to the public in 1962. It is located around Gagi River, South East of Bauchi Town. The reserve covers 2,058 sq. km. of savanna woodland and is inhabited by elephants, baboons, waterbucks, bushbucks, oribi, crocodile, hippopotamus, roan antelope, buffalo and various types of monkeys. Also located at the reserve is the Wiki Warm Spring, a natural clear water body that flows at 3 degrees Celsius temperature. The Wikki Warm Spring is the biggest of the four warm springs in Yankari.

Anambra

The enchanting feel of rustic life is the allure that drives tourists and visitors to Anambra, a state in southeast Nigeria with a wealthy heritage, charming landscapes and grounded culture. The Ogbunike cave is the most popular tourist destination in Anambra state. The cave is made up of tunnels, and streams. You can also visit the Igbo Ukwu museum is the hub that holds priceless archaeological artefacts excavated as far as the 10th century and the Crocodile Lake called Agulu which is home to hundreds of crocodiles and water turtles.

Lagos

Lagos is the commercial capital of Lagos, but despite being a city cut out for all work, it is also the relaxation capital of the country. With numerous hotels, bars, restaurants, clubs scattered all over the city, it is the business and playground hub of many. Some of the top destinations to check out in the city include Terra Kulture, Nike Art Gallery, Lekki Conservation Centre, Eko Atlantic, Oniru beach among others.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region in Tanzania in East Africa. It consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja and Pemba. Zanzibar’s coastline offers some of the best beaches in the world where you can picnic, surf and swim. Stone Town, a UNESCO world heritage site due to its unique architecture, a mix of European, Indian and Arab influences is a must-visit and Prison Island, a tour that provides a fascinating glimpse into the island’s slightly dark past.

Cape Verde

Cape Verde is an arrow-shaped archipelago which features endless luxury accommodations and rich music with its people famed for being ‘morabeza’ (Creole for hospitality), you are bound to be enchanted by this paradisiacal destination. Some of the exciting things to do in Cape Verde are: go diving or snorkelling at the island of Sal, chill at Santa Maria Beach and hike to a volcano on the island of Fogo.

Nairobi

Nairobi is the capital of Kenya and East Africa’s most cosmopolitan city. Marrakech

Marrakech is one of the most popular cities for tourists in Northern Africa. It is home to beautiful mosques, palaces and gardens. Marrakech has both the medieval and modern parts of town. As such, there is so much to do which include the Koutoubia Mosque, Marrakech’s most famous landmark with its striking, 70-meter-tall minaret visible for miles in every direction, the magnificent Bahia Palace built in the late 19th century and Dar Si Said Museum of Moroccan Arts and Crafts. Dubai is a tourism-friendly city which is one of the reasons why a lot of Nigerians are travelling there. Dubai is an emirate in the United Arab Emirates unique for luxury shopping, ultramodern architecture and a vibrant nightlife scene. Places to visit include Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Dubai Museum, Jumeirah Mosque and Dubai Frame among others.

Istanbul

Istanbul, the biggest city in Turkey is a city embedded in history, culture and beauty. Referred to as Byzantium in ancient times, the city’s name was renamed Constantinople in 324 CE. Although Istanbul is presently a metropolis, it never abdicated its historic heritage which is held closely through its mosques, basilicas and cathedrals, and ancient bazaars. While in Istanbul, the spots to visit are Chora Church, Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern and Istanbul Archaeology Museum etc.
