Ndulumo Cottages is truly the unsung gem of the dry and hilly Yatta Plateau. This two cottage haven is tucked in a valley, on the banks of the winding River Thika. Escape the city for a weekend in this off the beaten path enclave and you will come back rejuvenated.

Ndulumo Cottages is one of the two family-run properties within Kipwa Conservancy in Yatta, Machakos County. The drive from Nairobi to Yatta will take you through miles of sun-battered plains into rural homesteads with mud brick houses, and across a shallow stream with a handful of bubbly children playing, swimming and fishing.

Dining at Ndulumo Cottages

The cottage is on self-catering basis, but you can request for a chef. Have someone worry about what to put on your plate, as you occupy your mind with other interesting things like where to spend the afternoon. The chef will treat you to tantalising Kenyan dishes.

At this lavish cottage, you will:

  • Dine outdoors, on a lush lawn under the shade of mature exotic trees of Yatta Plateau.
  • Enjoy sundowner drinks at a bar carved out of a stone slab, with the river just a few steps below. The lush outdoor area is well-lit at night. Hop from the bar to the dining table for a gourmet meal, and over to the bonfire for a merry night.
  • Wake-up to breakfast by the river. The chef will treat you to an American breakfast with boiled eggs, sausages, bread and a variety of beverages.

Afternoons at Kipwa Conservancy

There is so much to experience in Kipwa Conservancy. Its river bank location lets you walk a few steps to the river. To relax within the property, with the sound of the river in the background, the hammocks will do.

To cool off, drive to the adjacent Kipwa Cottages swimming pool, which has the majestic Iliminanthi and Kwandeke hills as the backdrop. Explore the grounds of this side of the conservancy to see a tortoise, crocodiles and an ostrich.

Expect a homely experience, courteous hosts and adventures from dawn to dusk.
