Hiking in Kenya lets you explore enchanting trails tucked away in some of the most exotic destinations.  Hiking lets you discover gems that include waterfalls, valleys, hills and indigenous forests. You will probably explore:

1. Castle Forest

Experience a day on the slopes of Mount Kenya with a trip to Castle Forest Station in Kirinyaga County. The hike is well worth the over two hour road trip from Nairobi to the forest station. Your adventure will start from Castle Forest Station’s gate, and you will walk through the serene forest to an enchanting waterfall, and back. It takes about half a day for the 20km adventure, but the mud trails and the steep descent to the waterfall can slow you down further.

2. Mt. Longonot

Explore the mauve looking attraction you may have seen countless of times when driving along the Great Rift Valley Viewpoint. Mt. Longonot is situated about 60km from Nairobi, about an hour’s journey. You can hike to the rim and back down, or go all the way up and around the crater’s rim. It takes about 3 to 4 hours to explore this attraction.

3. William Hill

This hill is another of the classic hiking trails in Kikuyu Escarpment. The trip to this hill is amazing. Drive through the countryside to start the hike on the floor of the great gorge, just opposite an ancient Italian Church built by Italian prisoners of war in 1942. The ascent to the summit of the hill starts with an about 10km walk across a sparsely inhabited escarpment. From Osotua Camp and Cottages, which is at the foot of the steep hill, start a steep climb for about 4km to reach the hill’s summit. William Hill is one of the difficult climbs in the Great Rift but one of the most rewarding hikes. The summit yields a panorama of the gorge’s floor, Mount Margaret and Mount Longonot.

4. Menengai Crater

The hike on this 2300m high crater starts from the rim, into the floor, and back up. Menengai Crater is about 238km from Nairobi.

5. Aberdare Ranges Hiking Trails

The Aberdare Ranges have a variety of day hiking trails. In addition to trekking in the most enchanting forests, you will get an unrivalled view of the country’s best waterfalls. The best hiking trails in the ranges are Kereita Forest, Ragia Forest and Elephant Hill. You can also hike to Zania Falls, and explore the many caves in the ranges.

6. Mt. Ololokwe

Mount Ololokwe is perched on the dry and dusty plains of Samburu. From its summit, you are treated to spectacular 360-degree view of the region.

7. Chyulu Hills

Explore Chyulu Hills to see Kisula Caves that are hundreds of years old, and are some of the world’s longest lava tube caves. These caves are accessed after a 15km hike through a picturesque landscape. This attraction is about 200km from Nairobi.

8. Kijabe Hill

Kijabe Hill is an exciting climb. It is a popular prep hike before climbing Mount Kenya. This hill is within Kikuyu Escarpment, and it takes about 7 to 8 hours to reach its summit.

9. Ngong Hills

Just about an hour from the city centre, there is so much to see and do in Ngong. In addition to hiking, you can host a picnic with your friends on the hills. The highest point is about 2460m high.

10. Ol Donyo Sabuk

Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park is located about 85km from Nairobi. Within this park is the mountain, which is the park’s dominant feature. The park’s indigenous forest is home to buffalos, monkeys and antelopes.

Hiking in Kenya ought to be in your list of safari activities. There is so much to see and experience.
