Jumia Travel Celebrates the African Travel Awards

  • Winners feted at a colorful ceremony, according their commitment to the travel and hospitality industry

Jumia Travel, Africa’s leading online travel agency, last weekend, celebrated the 2nd edition of the African Travel Awards, that were marked by pomp and color.

The awards are aimed at celebrating hoteliers, airlines and travel websites for their contribution to the success of the travel, hospitality and tourism industries in 2017, as well as to encourage provision of improved quality services to Tanzanians.

Speaking during the event Jumia Travel Tanzania’s Public Relations Manager, Geofrey Kijanga noted that the awards aim to recognize and award initiatives by the hospitality players as well as to set a credible benchmark for the tourism industry in Africa.


“The Travel and Tourism sector in Africa has evolved over the past years, with online booking of accommodation and flights taking stage. Service providers have, as a result, have to provide the best services possible, personalized to meet each traveler’s needs,” said and concluded the Public Relations Manager, “It is in light of this that Jumia Travel has organized a Travel Awards Ceremony to: Award Hotels, Airlines & Travel Websites, Encourage provision of better services, Enhance hotels efforts to meet the expectations of an increasingly demanding clientele, and Promote New Technologies for the Hospitality Industry.”

The 2017 African Travel Awards Winners were announced as follows, under seven categories: Jumia Travel Booking Award 2017 – Amaan Bungalows, Travelers’ Choice Award 2017 – Mazsons Hotel, Best Leisure Hotel in Tanzania 2017 – Park Hyatt Zanzibar, Best Business Hotel in Tanzania 2017 – Harbour View Suites, Customer’s Favorite Hotel in Tanzania 2017 – Hotel White Sands: Beach Resort, Best Airline Company in Tanzania 2017 – Precision Air, and Best Destination Website in 2017 – Michuzijr blogspot.

Upon receiving the award, Harbour View Suites Hotel’s Front Office Manager, Hemed Kiwanga explained that he was very surprised with the award winning but it was something they deserved due to unbeatable services offered at the hotel.

“We are very honored to receive this award tonight. I think we deserved this win regarding that our hotel offer the best services to business persons in the city. Compared to other hotels we were in the same competition with, Harbour View Suites is equipped with all the amenities a business person would require,” said and concluded that, “On the other side, I would like to extend our sincere congratulations to Jumia Travel on this initiative. There was no such a thing in the industry. We believe it will act as a waking up call to all the hoteliers and other stakeholders in the hospitality industry, to embrace the changes so as to fulfil the needs of their customers.”

The event also marked the launch of a “Think Tank”, an African Hospitality Club by Jumia Travel, hoteliers and other local tourism players, whose main objective is to bring together ideas towards improving African tourism. This follows the successful launch of the 2017 African Hospitality Report in in collaboration with Tourism Confederation of Tanzania, Hotel Association of Tanzania, hoteliers and a series of national and international-based reports.

The inaugural awards held in 2016 ascertained Jumia Travel commitment to keep bettering the travel experience in Africa, positioning the awards ceremony as a key event in the travel and tourism sector in each country. This year, they were simultaneously held in 7 other African cities including Algiers, Dakar, Abidjan, Accra, Douala, Dar Es Salaam, and Kampala. Kenya and Nigeria will hold the ceremony on 1st February 2018.
