JUMIA TRAVEL ANNOUNCES #MyEthiopia Social Media Campaign

Addis Ababa; 8th of March 2016: Africa’s largest Online Hotel Booking Portal- travel.jumia.com, announced today the opening of social media campaign to promote domestic and international Tourism in Ethiopia. The campaign encourages individuals as well as public and private sectors to share photos in their social media pages from the historical Ethiopia with a hashtag #MyEthiopia.

The campaign is aimed at bringing more visitors to Ethiopia and to boost tourism which is a component of the country’s Poverty Reduction Strategy. Jumia Travel came to Ethiopia back in May 2015, in response to the regional demand and growth in online bookings. This is well indicated in a recent regional survey which placed online hotel bookings at 37% while a report by UNWTO put online travel related activity at 59% worldwide. Ethiopia has also shown great interest and potential in growing tourism sector, with 500 hotels in Ethiopia now partnering with travel.jumia.com hence creating the largest online network of hotels there.

Mobile internet users grew by 1.2% since 2012 driven by increasing use of social media networks. Ethiopia reached more than a million users increasing social media users by 20% between 2012 and 2013.  Currently, two-thirds of African adults have access to technology browsing health information, price data and banking services.
