Jamhuri Day is one of the national holidays in Kenya, celebrated in December. It is celebrated on 12th December.

What do we celebrate on Jamhuri Day?

Jamhuri is a Swahili word that means republic. Essentially, this national holiday represents the day Kenya became a republic. Kenya gained independence from the British on 12th December 1963. A year later, on 12th December 1964, it became a republic.

Jamhuri Day Celebrations

Annually, on 12th December, the president leads citizens in marking the day Kenya became a republic. This national fete is held at the Nyayo National Stadium. It involves entertainment from choirs and traditional dance troupes, a celebration speech by the president and colourful airshows by the country’s air force.

Exciting Things to Do on Jamhuri Day

The 52nd Jamhuri Day is a few days away. If you do not intend to join President Uhuru Kenyatta for the Jamhuri Day celebrations, have a fun filled day exploring the country.

You can have a great Jamhuri Day in Nairobi, or you can leave the city for a quiet time in the countryside. The best places to visit out of town include Naivasha and Nakuru.

  • Go karting

Visit the racing circuit along Lang’ata Road for a 10-20 minutes adventure. Go-karting is a fast paced sport suitable for families too.

Visit the ice skating rink at Panari Sky Centre along Mombasa Road. Your family and friends will love the experience too.

A must visit attraction is Kitengela Glass. Explore the enchanting glass workshop, the statues in the yard, mosaic sculptures and the scary bridge. Kitengela Glass is located off Magadi Road. On the other side of the scary bridge, you can have lunch at Rolf’s Place. Fun things you can do on Jamhuri Day are limitless.
