Bazaruto Archipelago consists of 6 islands, and it is located in Vilanculos, Inhambane Province in Mozambique. The three main islands are Bazaruto, Benguerra and Magaruque. These islands form part of the Bazaruto National Marine Park. Barazuto has been ranked as one of the best diving destinations in Africa. Whether you are an experienced diver or a beginner, this is the place to be.

Best Bazaruto diving sites

Some of the shallow sites are Magaruque, Baluba Reef, Manta Ray Reef and South Point. The deep diving sites are Linene Reef, Marlin Pinnacle, Two-Mile Reef, Nine-Mile Reef, 12-Mile Reef, Potholes, Five-Mile Reef and Zenguelemo Point.

Scuba Diving lessons

In Bazaruto, you will get diving lessons from highly experienced PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) trainers. For safety, the first lessons take place in a swimming pool. The lessons take half a day before a beginner is taken to shallow parts of the ocean, still under supervision. All the necessary diving equipment is provided.

The best diving time is from April to September. During this time, the water is clear and you will see whales, Zambezi sharks, the black tail reef sharks, turtles, schools of brightly colored reef fish and the rare dugong if lucky.

How to get to Bazaruto Archipelago

There are flights to Vilanculos Airport in Mozambique’s coast. From the airport, you can then be transported by boat or sea-plane to the island of your choice, and start your adventure.

There are several hotels in Vilanculos. Bazaruto Island also has some nice hotels that are close to the diving sites.

Activities for Non-divers

You do not have to be a diving fan to visit Bazaruto. Other activities are island hoping to the five islands in a traditional dhow, horse riding, wind surfing, kayaking, fishing, sunset dhow cruises, visiting turtle nesting grounds and snorkelling.
